Verizon FIOS TV--how can I get rid of their box and dvr?

We are spending about $30 a month renting these two pieces of equipment from Verizon. How can we continue service but get our own compatible devices? I'm guessing it's not a big deal with the DVR but what about the box? Apologizing in advance for my ignorance in case this is a gimme question.

Isn't the DVR tied into the Cable Box? Do you want to purchase your own cable box and modem that are compatible with FIOS?

I think there is legislation in the works to allow people to purchase their own equipment, but for now you are tied to using their equipment and paying rent for it. The only exception is if you want the most basic channel package you don't need a set top box.

You will still need a set top box if you don't have a TV that can interpret HD signals, but you might be able to buy your own. If you want more than the local channels or if you want to record anything, you will have to use their box.

You will still have to use their DVR. The only thing you are allowed to buy on your own is an external storage device to store more hours of recordings.

Call and threaten to disconnect. They'll give you a discount of some sort.

You can use tivo, but then you have to rent cable cards, and I don't don't think it's much cheaper.

This is what we do. It's not much cheaper. We do it because TiVo is way more awesome, not to save money's

This is what we do. It's not much cheaper. We do it because TiVo is way more awesome, not to save money's.

Ah, forgot about cable cards. I have thought about TiVo a few times (have Xfinity), but wasn't sure what the price difference is.
