October Beach Getaway by Car?

Anonymous
Trying to plan a three-day getaway within driving distance from DC with my best friend, the first weekend of October. I'm hoping for the beach, but is that even realistic? Or will it be too cold pretty much anywhere north of Hilton Head? Or even there? I was thinking of combining Hilton Head with Savannah.

Any advice?

Are you trying to actually enjoy the beach? And beachy things? Like laying out? Going in the water? 'Cause that's not happening at any beach within driving distance of DC that time of the year.

I am willing to drive maybe 10 hours south. I don't need to sunbathe but I want it warm enough to swim in the ocean. Is my only option a flight to Miami?

Don't think you can drive anywhere where you can swim in the ocean. Just fly to florida.

Plus why would you want to drive 10 hours for a 3 day trip? Half your trip will be in the car.

I wouldn't drive for anything more than 4 hrs for a 3 day weekend. Fly to Florida, you can get cheap fares

I've been a little further south - Sea Island, Georgia - in October, and the weather was lovely, as was the beach.

We drove there when I was a child, but as an adult, I fly into either Savannah or Jacksonville.

Depending on where he Gulf Stream southern outerbanks should be warm enough to swim in.

I was in Hilton Head in early October a few years ago and the water was very warm.

I've swum in lakes around here in October, but I wouldn't bet on it.

We went to the Outer Banks at the end of October last year and had hot beach days every day we were there. Not sure if we were just lucky but it was amazing and we are planning to do similar this year.

Thanks, everyone! Just can't decide. Seems like Hilton Head is the northernmost place that is likely to be warm, but it's 8.5 hours away.

I truly don't mind the driving, as long as I don't have my kids with me, though.

Which may or may not be true this year. I lived in NW Florida, Oct has some good days on the gulf beaches--but not all days. The water is usually still warm but the Atlantic............not so much.

Why not just fly? Is it a money thing?
