Rising kindergartener, taking kid out of school for weekend trip on first week?

My daughter (oldest child) will be starting kindergarten next Monday but we wanted to take a long Labor Day weekend trip to the beach. And that would mean having to take her out of school on her first Friday at school. Are there any parents that do this? Or is it really frowned upon by the schools (MCPS)? Any advice would be really appreciated, as I have no experience with "real" school yet.

It would be fine. Sometimes kids get sick the first week and miss, and other kids have family plans. At this age it doesn't really matter. And with the long weekend anyway, kindergarteners will all have to "reboot" the Tuesday after Labor Day anyway. Your child may enjoy the benefits of not having her first week be a full five long days. Go and enjoy the beach as a family!

This is common with younger kids, go to the beach and enjoy family time together.

We have to miss two days the second week of school for a family wedding out of town. You won't be the only ones.

Sorry, I wouldn't. A lot of the routine stuff is established that week. Going 4 days then missing Friday-Monday and being tossed back in Tuesday to do it all alone might not work well. Is it the end of the world? No. But I personally don't believe in missing any of the first week-two if at all possible. It makes it harder for them to get back into "school mode" and it kind of looks like you don't take school seriously since its "just K."

Us too. It's not ideal, but will be ok.

I am pulling 2 HS kids out the same day (for important family event in CA) so you can certainly do it for a K-er. Have a good time.

K teacher here: go, have fun! It takes the first month to get routines down in k! She will be fine!

OP here, thank you for all the responses. I've never really hesitated about this for the kids' preschool but just needed some input for what public school is like. I'm feeling a lot better about having DD take one day off.

Everyone we asked said to go and have fun. So we are.

Why can't you just return late on Monday? School starts on Tuesday.

We are also going to the beach Labor Day weekend and plan to come home that evening so our K son can start school. It is very common to go away that weekend and everyone else starts school on time.

I admit I'm pretty conservative on this, but this is the kind of thing I just can't get behind. It tells kids "You have to go to school unless something better and more fun comes along, and then you do that." You didn't book the trip, but you're going, because you think Disney > School.
