Olympian's anthem decorum

Anonymous
As these Olympics wind down (and the US kicked some serious a$$!), here's a semi political question:
What did everyone think of the social media shaming that Gabby Douglas received for failing to put her hand over her heart during the anthem as the US women stood to receive their gold medals?
Anonymous
Most if not all of the track and field athletes aren't doing it.

Some of the US women's relay team did not have their hand over their hearts either, on the podium. Is a new round of shaming going to start?

Check the pjoyo that social media was reacting to. Douglas was the only one of the American Squsd who did not honor the anthem in the same fashion..

Lots of DCUMers thought she had an attitude and was a poor sport. I disagree.

She should salute the flag like the rest of her teammates.

Agreed. So tired of this PC nonsense. If she doesn't want to salute the flag like others, that's her right.

Why do shot-putters Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs get a pass for not having their hands over their hearts but Gabby Douglas doesn't?

First--what is the procedure for saluting the flag? for a non-military person? When singing the national anthem, it is not required to place hand over heart. She stood respectfully as it was sung.

Second, don't be a follower, be a leader. She was doing what she was taught to be correct. What her teammates did was incorrect, so why should she follow what they were doing?

Third, I think she just wasn't feeling it that day. And she just couldn't fake it. So why fake it? It wasn't like she was up there laughing and pointing to people in the audience a la Michael Phelps.

I have watched on average about 6 hours of Olympic coverage every day since it started and I have only seen the swimmers and gymnasts place their hand over heart when winning the gold. Why is that? Maybe, just maybe they are doing it wrong and everyone else knows the correct procedure.

I grew up in the olden days. Hand over heart for the pledge. Respectful stance/singing (if appropriate) for the national anthem.

It should be an honor to represent our country. She'll make millions in post Olympic endorsement deals. If she doesn't want to represent the U.S. which includes symbolically being respectful, then don't. That's her statement, she boycotts - She can't represent a country that stands for xyz .... Not give me all the money and prestige while I spit on you.

I personally thought Phelps laughing during the anthem was disrespectful even if it was about the Orioles. Time and place to contain your laughter.

And I like Phelps, a lot.
