Would you like some more to eat?? Stop with the plate scraping!!

Why do you do this? Scraping your plate with your fork and your finger is just weird. If you want some more food just get it. My friend does this all the time and I think shes damn near about to lick the plate. I have seen several people do this when I have them over for dinner. Does this bother anyone else?

My DH licks his plate. I absolutely HATE it.

Well, two things come to mind. If people are literally scraping their plates at your house, they either a. really liked the food, in which case you should take it as a compliment, or b. you should be serving larger portions.

It doesn’t bother me at all. I consider it a compliment.
When a good amount of food is left on the plate - that bothers me because I assume the food was not terribly tasty.

Stop back and think about how this affects you. It doesn't.

I like the feeling of closure from a cleaned plate. But I don't use my fingers or lick it!

My DH's family does this. I thought it was a British thing. They are noisy with their utensils/cutlery.

At my house when I serve food, I serve family style. So everyone helps themselves to the food on the table in serving dishes. If there is still half a pan of lasagna left on the table, why are you so intensely scraping your plate instead of just helping yourself to another serving (or a 1/4 serving if you only want a little).

Sometimes I use my fork to scrape up the last bit of sauce from my plate. I'm really not hungry and don't want another serving, but the sauce was so delicious that I want one last little taste of it. I'd never use my fingers or lick the plate, though, that's gross.

Never realized it would bother anyone, sorry about that. I'll try to keep it to just family dinners, when DH is doing the same thing .

I do the same. I'm mostly just enjoying the last little bits and the company, but don't want another serving.

Same. You are weird OP.

it is rude, OP. It also violates the basic rule of etiquette that you always leave a tiny bit of food on the plate for Miss Manners. The idea is that your host has sated your appetite so well with their delicious offerings that you cannot possibly finish everything.

Some of those etiquette rules are just stupid and this is one of them.

I always finish my entire plate. I dont use my fingers or lick my plate, but yes I eat everything and may even scrape my plate to get the last bit. If that makes me an annoying disgusting pig, so be it.

Serve bread so people can mop up with it quietly.

The people I have seen do this are the type that watch what they eat. They do not want more food and calories. They want a little bit more flavor.
