Flooring for the elderly? Like Kradal from NZ,

Anonymous
Anyone have suggestions for stable yet resilient flooring for the elderly people in an apartment? Carpet hard to clean, and catches walkers. Even cork tiles over concrete floors seem scary for falls. Gymnasium flooring looks awful and we're told can't be covered with Lino bc the glue won't stick. Sadly, our budget isn't unlimited either.
Any suggestions you have we'd appreciate.

Cork is available in many different thicknesses, and I think falling on it wouldn't be any worse than falling on carpet. Also, I think it's non-static - nice if they ever need oxygen for example.

I would do cork over a new thicker subfloor.
They use cork at many yoga studios. It's forgiving and softer than you think.

Falls are the #1 reason people end up in nursing homes.

Call your local AARP to see if they have ADA friendly contractor recommendations.

Also check out aging in place (or universal design) websites, e.g.,:

Also, many health insurers will do the equivalent of baby proofing for older adults for free. You're thinking about the right things, low vision, uneven flooring could mean a fall and a broken hip.
