Just wondering if anyone has a good suggestion for books on breastfeeding? I'd like to read up before baby arrives! Also, did anyone take a breastfeeding class? Did you find it useful? Thanks! |
I found a class (even before the baby) much more useful than the books, because you can actually practice positions, etc and ask questions.
I took a class through a lactation consultant at my work of all places, but I bet you can take one either through your hospital or OB, the Breastfeeding Center in downtown DC, or through La Leche League. My lactation consultant at work was named Vergie Hughes. I just googled her and found this group: http://www.ilca.org/education/courselistings.php They might be able to help you too. Good luck! |
I second the nursing mother's companion for a book... and a course before giving birth is always a good idea, just to give you an idea what to expect. But, I will tell you from first hand experience that no preparation really prepares you for breastfeeding. I had a tough time at first but with the help of a lactation consultant and attending the new mom's breastfeeding group at Inova Fairfax hospital, I was able to successfully breastfeed my son for 14 months. My advice is to see a lactation consultant earlier rather than later in the process. The $$ will pay you back ten-fold with a successful breastfeeding relationship with your child (as well as no formula - yeah!). I used Josie at Northern Virginia Lactation Consultants (http://www.northernvirginialactation.com) and they were GREAT. Good luck to you! |
I read the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, but really, nothing prepares you for it. I would suggest saving your money for a lactation consultant. If I had to do it over again, I would have had an appointment set up for the day I got back from the hospital and made sure to see the l/c at the hospital. Or at least have a number handy. |
I third the nursing mothers companion. I am reading it ight now and love it |
A book will not help with the actual technique if you are having problems. I went to the Breastfeeding Center on K Street and my problem was solved by Pat in one visit. Plan to go to this place after the baby arrives. I never referred to my books after the first 4 weeks. Instead of buying, I borrowed some from the DC Libray - they have a pretty good collection. Also, most of the info on the Internet was more useful because I could read forums and Q & A's. |
