Replacing a section of a tile floor

Anonymous
A section of our kitchen tile tented and has to be replaced. The house is about 8 years old and the tile is not available any longer. We will be selling the house next spring, so we don't want to replace the entire floor at this point. The section is in the mudroom, which is contiguous with the kitchen, laundry, and powder room. Would it look odd to try to match the color, but replace the section that is damaged with a different design? I'm thinking of doing something to mimic a rug design or some other sort of feature tile. It does happen to be right in the center of the mudroom, so it wouldn't be in some random location.

Our handyman pulled out our dryer and somehow removed one piece of tile from where dryer sits. Then replaced it with a similar tile. Since no one can see under dryer it doesn't matter. Then the exact matching tile he put in where damaged tile was visible.

What you're proposing sounds logical. This is one of those where it will have to look like it was meant to be there and not random. Another alternative would be to re-tile the entire mudroom in a coordinating tile/design with a border or something especially where the mudroom meets the kitchen, powder room and laundry.
