DH wants to have only one child because of the environment

He's been saying it for a while and I didn't consider it serious. Today he showed me this article. I have to say he's totally right but I'm not happy about it.

From the article:

Below are a few examples of how much carbon dioxide (in metric tons) is saved over a lifetime (80 years) by a typical American for certain actions, including not having one child.

Increase car's fuel economy from 20 to 30 mpg: 148
Reduce miles driven from 231 to 155 per week: 147
Replace single-glazed windows with energy-efficient windows: 121
Replace ten 75-watt incandescent bulbs with 25-watt energy-efficient lights: 36
Replace old refrigerator with energy-efficient model: 19
Recycle newspapers, magazines, glass, plastic, aluminum and steel cans: 17
Reduce number of children by one (with emissions fixed at 2005 per-capita values): 9,441

What's your carbon footprint? Use the EPA's calculator to get an estimate.

Why hasn't he committed suicide?

Just make sure all extra children become environmental engineers or something.

Oh whatever. In the meantime India will probably double their population in 20 years.

By that theory, your DH should just remove himself from the planet and really reduce his carbon footprint.

Not as much. An adult's remaining life span is shorter and thus his carbon footprint is smaller. A child will also likely reproduce.

You might not like what the article says, but why be afraid to engage with it?

That's one of the reasons DH and I only had one. We adopted a second. Not because we wanted two, but she was a member of extended family who needed an immediate family.

Gee do you also get a vote in this plan to save the planet, or just him?

Tell him you want another kid, and his participation is not strictly necessary.

Tell him that in Africa and South Asia they're breeding like rabbits and one less North American kid is not going to make a damn bit of difference.

Also tell him to stop being such a weakling.

Well, if husband is not alive, then he can't reproduce, nor can his potential children and their potential children...

We use more resources per person.

Your husband is incredibly silly.

I think it's a perfectly good reason to only have one child. Overpopulation is a serious problem and most people have their heads in the sand about it, especially when it comes to their own choices and especially family planning. I didn't read the link you provided, but read up on China's one child policy.

It's just a code for "I don't want no more of this poop scream burp nag crap"
