People who say they are Christian...

If someone says they are Christian. What denominations does that typically refer to?

So for example, a Catholic is more likely to say they are Catholic. What about Lutherans or Methodists?

I just say Christian. I grew up Presbyterian, but now go to a non denominational church. I'm guessing most Protestants just say Christian, unless they have a specific reason for going to a certain denominational church, like some will say they are Baptist.

I say Lutheran.

Well it depends on the context of the conversation OP. If a guy I don't know asked me "What's your religion?", I'd say I'm a Reformed Christian. If we started getting into deeper theological stuff, I'd bring up my denomination.( Anglican)

People who are born again / evangelical frequently refer to themselves as Christian rather than any particular denomination.

And often think that they have the corner on the title of Christian. I'm Catholic and once got a fund-raising letter from a friend raising money for a mission trip talking about how it was important because Christianity was only the third most common religion in that country, the first two being Islam and Catholicism.

I don't want to be lumped in with the Southern Baptists or other evangelical groups. I'll say something like, "we attend a new thought Christian church".

What in the heck is that?

If I'm speaking to a non-Christian whom I know doesn't have a great knowledge of the various denominations within Christianity, I'll just say I'm Christian in which case I'm not referring to any specific denomination. If I'm speaking to another Christian or someone whom I have reason to believe knows of the various denominations, I'll be more specific and mention I'm Presbytarian.

What? Anglicans aren't Reformed (which refers to Calvinism).

I had a friend in college who called himself a recovering Catholic.

If we're discussing world religions, I say I am Christian. If discussing US religion, I say I am protestant. If getting to the nitty gritty of churches, I say I am Presbyterian.

I always say I'm Catholic and I do take offense when people use Christian to mean only evangelical Protestants. In addition to Catholicism, there are many other non-Protestant denominations and we all are Christian.

Well, but evangelical protestants call themselves specifically Christians - so people are right to be confused.
