| i eat crab once or twice a year but never had any problems before. today we went out to Fish Market for lunch and i had five or six crabs plus a few shrimps. 1.5 hours later i started to itch a little bit mostly on my arms and legs. no visible spots (yet). could it be from the sun not the food? nothing to worry about if it doesn't get any worse? |
| take some benedryl. |

Maybe consider seeing an allergist to test for this? A friend recently developed a serious allergy to shellfish at 35 after eating it many many times before...it does happen even if it's rare.

| You develop an allergy out of the clear blue sky and it can continue to get worse. You might only be a little itchy this time, but next time you could go into anaphylactic shook. You should see your doctor for allergy testing and maybe an Epi-pen. |
|
This happened to me as well at age 30 after years of eating shrimp. Apparently this is an allergy people can develop with age. Take benedryl tonight, stay away from it until
You can see an allergist and get an epipen. not sure if you're male or female, but I am female and was told the hormones of pregnancy can cause allergies and intolerances to develop. |

We saw an allergist recently. He said a lot of people can have a "reaction" to certain foods as a one off and it not be an
"allergic" reaction. For it to be an allergic reaction it has to be a lot more severe and takes a lot longer to play out (over an hour or two to appear, over an hour or two to retreat from point of treatment). Other factors also - but, definitely check it out because a shell fish allergy is one you need to take seriously. |
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. In fact, pregnancy causes your body to produce a large amount of natural corticosteroids, which greatly reduces the symptoms of allergies and other autoimmune conditions. However, a shellfish allergy can pop up at pretty much anytime in your life. It's up to you if you want to see an allergist or do your own self-test to see if it occurs again. I think itching without a rash does not necessarily indicate an allergy and could easily have been caused by too much sun, like you said. |
Autoimmune diseases can be affected by pregnancy hormonal changes, e.g.,: http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/psoriasis/psoriasis-causes |
| Food allergies don't usually result in itchy extremities hours later and no other symptoms. Still, getting tested can't hurt. Sounds more like the sun to me though. |
| Itchy hands could be caused by Old Bay plus scratches from the crab shells. Usually allergic itching you would have itching in your mouth or throat or hives. |
| I ate crabs as a kid and got an itchy chin. I think it was the Old Bay Seasoning which has red pepper in it which I am allergic to. |
| Sometime the farm raised shrimp are contaminated. It can give you a symptoms of being allergic to shrimp/shell fish when you are not. |
| Shrimp, not shrimps. |
Thank you for the nearly useless link on psoriasis. However, the single sentence it has on pregnancy corroborates that pregnancy hormones are known to relieve symptoms. "A pregnant woman's symptoms are more likely to improve than worsen, if any changes occur at all. " |
