New to DC public school -- shouldn't we have a class schedule, supply list, information on lunches,

Anonymous
Hi,

We're newly enrolled to a DC public middle school. We've had little information on our child's day or preparedness expectations. Staff has said not to worry. Is it normal to just send the kid to school cold and have him get up to speed from there?

Yes. Sadly.

Which school? All our info is on the website. Just received schedule last week but knew about orientation from website at the beginning of summer.

Some of this is typical elementary to middle transition.

Either each teacher will have his/her own supply request, or it will be up to your kid to figure out a system that works for themselves. So better not to shop. Send DC with spiral, pen and pencil for first day.

Schedules usually come in the mail.

You will be lucky if you have teacher

If Deal: Summer assignments, supply lists, new parent orientation, etc. are on Deal's website. Schedule arrived a week or so ago, including information about where to report on the first day of school for each grade, and links to volunteer.

The school at issue is Stuart-Hobson. We don't know where to go on first day, what time, what entrance, how lunch works, etc. We did get a sheet on how to get uniforms. Also a postcard from DC public schools reminding us of the first day of school.

School starts at 8:45 and concludes at 3:15. Go through the front doors, they may have schedules up and look for your childs name.

Thank you.

There is a link on the front page here for SH back-to-school information:

Does anyone know how lunch works? Bring your own or how to buy at the school?

Thanks for the link. That is some of what I was looking for.

Nothing from our highly regarded charter school yet.

It usually comes about a week ahead of time.

so at SH they're expecting every kid to have downloaded the Moss Hollow permission slip and bring it back on the first day of school?

good luck with that. I imagine a lot of kids are not going to get to go on that trip...and probably won't show up at school instead, either.

also, I just read the newsletter and there are so many typos. It's embarrassing. I'm IB for a school that a lot of people wish fed into SH and I'm not really seeing why.

Yeah, I thought that was odd, too. If I didn't see the link someone posted here I would not know about the field trip.
