Does anyone have any recommendations for music instruction in PG county? DD is four and I am beginning to think about this. I would like her to learn at least one instrument.
Oh, and a follow up, if you have tried out the classes offered by the county parks and recs department let me know how those are!
What part of PG are you in?
Lanham
Pee Wee Piano
You could also reach out to local universities. Universities have students who teach. I'm a music student at UMD and several students provide their names and contact information to administration letting giving permission to be contacted for teaching and performance opportunities. Everyone on the list has the endorsement of their professors, no one gets on the list without it.
I highly recommend the Ottley Music School with 2 PG locations: Camp Springs, MD (right off Route 5 and Allentown) and Hyattsville, MD (in the Kaiser building across from PG Plaza mall). Mrs. Ottley is the real deal and our 10 yr old son and 8 yr old daughter have attended since 2013.
Website is www.ottleymusic.org (301) 454-0991 ยท 6525 Belcrest Rd Hyattsville, MD 20782 (HQ) She's been teaching music over 40 years.
Music and Arts stores have lessons or can give local recommendations.
If you're interested in strings (violin, cello) look at the teacher recommendations at Gayles Violins in college park. Also, house of musical traditions has a big list of teachers for various instruments- many of them teach in/near PG county.
For piano, check out http://www.nicolaspellon.com/. He's in Upper Marlboro but is worth the drive. He offers a 2 week trial to test the water. My daughter studied under him. He is very good.

This is a great thread! Thank you for all these recommendations.
Nicolas is fantastic! Took a few classes with him a few years ago, and was drawn in by his level of patience with teaching adults, and his storytelling of the composers, notes, keys, etc! I plan to enroll my daughter in his class next year, when she turns 4! Absolutely a gem in Upper Marlboro! |
