Experience trying to get rid of smoke smells in room?

Anonymous
Has anyone been successful in doing this? Service Master has a hydroxyl process (or something like that). Does it actually work? Cleaning, priming and painting did not do the trick. Just one small room, but it stinks.

Is the room in a SFH you own? Smoke smell can be really stubborn and you probably have to take down the drywall, at the absolute minimum.

If you have bad smells, blame the textiles and consider throwing them out!

You need to rip out the flooring too.

Pretty much rip it up. Rugs, flooring, and if its a bathroom, take it down to the studs and start again.

This is the water closet of the master bath. The floor is tile, there are no textiles. I think it is in the drywall, despite my efforts to clean with bleach, seal with kilz max, and paint (2 coats). It still smells. Our choices now are (a) try servicemaster hydroxyl generator or (b) pull off the drywall and replace it.

This is the room with the toilet. Small room, but big stink.

Pull the drywall and insulation out, replace all the tile, basically gut it.

Buy an ozone creator. I'm a real estate agent and have had to deal with this quite a bit. It was the best $100 I have spent. You can't have anything living in the house such as plants and pets, but it works. Look into it.

Is this from fire damage or someone smoking in the room?

Sorry, PP here. I should have clarified. You can't be in the house while its running (anywhere from 2-6 hours and for 4-6 times, in my experience). After that, the house just needs to air out for 20-30 min. Nothing toxic is left behind. But, there is a lot more info online.
