Heading to Maine - family-friendly things to do in New England?

We're talking a long slow trip up to Portland, Maine, and would love to stay a few places on the way. Suggestions for stuff kids love, great hikes and scenic views, fun places to eat, and/or quick stops along the way?

Mystic is a fun little town to stop in. Beach towns along the Rhode Island coast lots of fun and warm water for swimming. The water in Maine is soooo cold.

Have a great time. Went to Portland in June and loved it.

Are you taking 95? If so, Newport is a good stop. If you are taking 84, Old Sturbridge might make a good stop. There's also the Breasley Zoo in CT which is nice and CT has a ton of coastal towns. Farther north, could pass through Lexington and Concord (lots of historic sites) and/or Boston. north of Boston on way up to Maine you have Rockport, York, ME and Ongunquit. All charming seaside tourist towns.

I hate the drive on 95N. Just get to Maine as fast as you can.

Why pack and unpack over and over when Maine awaits?

730 had good ideas but I wouldn't take 95 thru RI

Portsmouth, NH is a very cute town. If you need to stop for lunch/dinner, this is a good option.
