Do Most Students at Sidwell Smoke Pot?

Anonymous
This question is inspired by the photos showing recent Sidwell grad Malia smoking pot at Lollapaloza. From what I've heard, Malia was a top student at Sidwell which makes me think that if the top, Harvard bound students at Sidwell are smoking weed, it's probably rather pervasive among the less academic crowd.

Pretty common at elite privates.

Some of the best students at the private school I attended as well as the one where I taught smoked pot.

I graduated with honors from an Ivy and I used to smoke daily.

I have not seen this picture of Malia. I saw a picture of her dancing with girlfriends on the side of a stage.

Malias crowd has been the weed smoker/partier crowd for all of high school. You can smoke recreationally and still get into Harvard or even get elected president. It just isn't that big of a deal. I would think the poor secret service agents who have to look the other way have a hard job though. Drugs were forbidden at Lollapalooza this year but I guess Malia and her friends were allowed to bring them in.

Have you ever been to a concert...anywhere? Music festival? Hell, jazz in the garden? Drugs are forbidden at all those places (well I guess now "legal" in DC but I'd guess it's still not expressly allowed in the sculpture garden) but people bring them in all the time. Without celebrity status or a team of Secret Service agents. Geez Louise.

This surprises me. I was a top student at a middle class public school and I honestly can't think of anyone in my crowd who smoked pot in high school. It seems really odd that smoking pot would be so common for students who attend schools that are supposed to be "better".

UH most people smoke pot. You realize this country has a large drug appetite, right? It isn't just public school kids and former public school kids doing them.

While the use of pot has grown substantially in recent years and it has become more commonly accepted, "most people" do not smoke pot. The use of pot cuts across all socio-economic lines, but it is not as prevalent as PP suggests.

PP here. There was a thread on DCUM a few years ago titled "Have you ever smoked pot?" And surprising IMO, the overwhelming number of posters said no.

14 million Americans smoke it regularly.

25 million did within the past year.

My understanding is that drug use is generally more prevalent at the elite schools because of easy access and resources. What I don't understand is how a parent not know that their kid smokes pot. I mean the crap wreaks and lingers...

I guess as a parent of a toddler who is trying to decide whether to send DD to private or public, I find this notion of marijuana being so prevalent at top privates to be quite disturbing. Obviously plenty of public school students smoke pot as well. But in my experience it was definitely not the norm among the very top students, and I'm apprehensive about spending $480,000 to put her in a peer group that is more likely to smoke pot than what she would be with if she were a presumably top student in a public school.
