My parents gave us their real wood kitchen (eat in) table when we moved into our hours 5 years ago. It looked lovely the day we got it....but got scratched so easily. A new scratch would appear every time one of the cats jumped on it, every time the kids roughly put down a utensil....6 month after getting the table it looked awful and it's been covered by a table cloth ever since.
Our other furniture isn't in perfect condition, but is not nearly as bad. We want to get a brand new kitchen table but don't want to buy something that is going to be immediately destroyed. I like the look of wood. Any suggestions on a table that can take a beating and still look great? |
| Your table is probably made of a soft wood such as pine. Go for one made of a hardwood such as oak, ash, birch, or maple and you'll have a much longer lasting table top. Oak and ash are the best options for durability. |

Keep the cats off the table! That's the first step.
We have a mango wood table that still looks great 2 years in. And it was cheap. |
| Your cats should not be on your kitchen table (or counters for that matter)! |
| We had a circle of glass cut to match the top of the table (not expensive at all) and it has preserved our table despite daily abuse from two kids and animals. This worked so well we did it for the coffee table as well. |
| +1 to get glass cut. We used Banner Glass in Silver Spring and they were great. Our table is oval and the glass is great. I love it because it's easy to clean. |
For starters keep the damn cats off of surfaces that you eat upon. Disgusting |
Cats go where they want. If they aren't sitting on your plates everyone will live. |
Truth. If your cat is smart enough to learn to stay off the table when you're around....you can bet he's on the table when you're not... |
