Will a rear-facing infant seat fit in an economy plane seat?

We are traveling next month and do not have a seat for DD but have been advised to take her car seat and see if there is an empty seat near us that we could use. Her car seat (Chicco Keyfit 30) seems big to me, and I'm wondering if it would really fit in the tiny space between seats on a plane? I'm really short, but even I feel cramped when I fly. Anyone know about this? Also, is it a problem to gate-check the seat if we can't use it on the plane (we'll also have an umbrella stroller to gate-check)? Thanks!

I had the Keyfit. It fits in a plane seat. Check the manual, it should state that.

It should fit on the plane, although the person in front of you won't be able to recline.
