Expectant and Postpartum Moms
did anyone get one of these? We just bought a new bed and I would hate to ruin the mattress. Where would I get a waterproof pad and what is it called? Thanks
I purchased a small mattress protector for the same reason -- new bed and worried about water breaking. I think it was about $10 from Target and really just fit under me, not the entire bed. My water did break in bed, but I was awake and quickly realized what was happening, so there wasn't a drop of fluid on the mattress. I suppose that if I'd been asleep, the mattress protector would have provided a good save!
I found a waterproof pad at Rite Aid and placed it under the mattress pad just under me. I didn't end up needing it but felt better to be safe than sorry with the mattress. I did notice it made me hot (although could've just been the pregnancy hormones). I intitally bought a full waterproof mattress cover from overstock.com but found that it made too much noise when I moved. Good luck.

For me my water broke at 1 am--woke up and thought I'd peed, but didn't get the big gush until we were at the hospital, thank goodness!
I've found twin sized waterproof mattress pads for $13 at Ross for my son's bed, I wasn't looking for larger sizes, but I bed they would have them too. I had a waterproof cover that I bought at Overstock.com for our Queen, but I don't remember how much I paid. Probably in the $20 range. |

Hmm...good ideas. I hadn't thought of this issue.
Thanks for posting. |
Mine broke in bed at 3AM and I woke up iimmediately with no damage to the bed.
Mine broke in bed, too, and no damage to the mattress. This is probably a purchase you can skip. My guess is that even if you're sleeping you will know right away that something has just happened! A regular mattress pad should probably be all the protection needed.
I bought a small waterproof pad (about 2 feet by 3 feet) at CVS. I think it is a pad for senior citizens with incontinence problems. It was very helpful because my water broke while I was sleeping, and since it was the trickly kind I did not wake up for a while. By the time I woke up the pad was pretty wet. I also used the pad post partum as a diaper chaging cloth on our sofa. Also, you might use it in your car while you are driving to the hospital to protect your car seat from water. the pad was very cheap like $10 or so, so it was a good purchase for me.
I used a large black plastic garbage bag. Buy a mattress pad if you want... but all you really need is something so that if there is a quick/instantaenous flood, it protects the mattress.
My water didn't break either time with my two pregnancies, but you can buy a waterproof vinyl mattress cover from Linens N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond for around $10 -- if you put it under the mattress pad, you won't even know it's there.
ProAbly need to go shopping - a protector Gould be a good idea. Thanks.

It's usually not a huge gush of fluid, from what I've read. I put a large beach towel between the sheet and the mattress pad, and that was sufficient. When I woke up one morning, I had a little bit of wetness like I'd peed just a little and realized my water had broken.
You could always buy a waterproof crib mattress protector for your child-to-be and put it under the area where you sleep, then you'd have a use for it afterward.

there was a gush when my water broke, and i was sitting on the bed, but i didn't have a waterproof mattress protector... and guess what! the mattress is fine!
We bought a waterproof mattress pad. (Any dept store should carry them, but we got ours at Macy's.) I wanted something that would feel just like a normal mattress pad and that we could leave on for months. It's been indispensable for leaky breasts, baby spit-ups, and ill-fitting diapers, too.
i bought ours at the company store (companystore.com) after a cousin had her water break in bed with a gush and destroy the mattress, which her husband then had to throw out and replace while she was in the hospital. Also had terrible sweats post-partum and leaked milk like there was no tomorrow - it was a good buy for me...
