Moody sensitive crying 8.5 yo son

My son has recently become very emotional. He will bring up something minor and burst into tears. It may be something small that happened at school a long time ago or something that's bugging him. He's never been a crier before and says there is nothing going on other than the specific thing he's talking about at that moment. He also has been very hungry and I suspect a growth spurt is about to start. We have never had a crying stage and he's always been a fairly tough kid. Anyone else see this at this age?

Now almost 10 and much happier.
