My son just received an ADHD dx. The neuropsych eval suggested medication. We are anxious, but are going to try this. He is 9. What have your experiences been with your AHD kids. He also has some anxiety, but it's not overwhelming.
Thanks for sharing any experiences.... |

My 7yo was diagnosed inattentive ADD about 6 months ago and now takes Medadate CD. It's been a very good experience so far and I would say the side effects for my son are minimal- lighter lunch appetite and goes to sleep later (at 9 pm vs. 8- but that can be age?). He is able to focus at school which resulted in better grades, completed work and more confidence in himself.

| ADHD meds can exacerbate anxiety, so I would work with a skilled child psychiatrist to find the med(s) that work best. |

Definitely only see a child psychiatrist specialized in treating ADHD. We are happy with Dr. Hemanth in Rockville. Do a little research into drug categories, OP. Stimulants are by far the safest and best-known. Then there are the others. 11 year DS with severe ADHD takes 20mg of Focalin XR (extended release). The extended release is important because it ensures that about half of the dose is activated at around midday instead of immediately when taken in the morning, and lasts through the afternoon. Appetite usually decreases, but it's very important to eat so that the whole dose is not metabolized in the morning. |
