Gypsy wedding show...

I'm embarrassed to say that I was channel surfing and stopped on the gypsy wedding show on TLC. Two gypsy daughters are getting married to two "gorgers"(sp)? What does that mean? The mom the two brides keeps saying that she's upset that her gypsy daughters are marrying Americans. I'm confused!

It means non-gypsy.

I get that it's non-gypsy, but why did she say Americans? Do the gypsies not consider themselves American? If not, what is their nationality?

Why not just google this, she wondered, as she felt something scratchy inside her shirt.

It was a tortilla chip.

Gypsies are Romas and want their daughters to marry a fellow Roma. It would be like a Saudi mother wanting her daughter to marry a Saudi.

I'm not sure what a tortilla chip is? Is it American? Should I Google it?

Ugh I got sucked into watching that show until so late last night. What a waste of time. There cannot be people in Thai country with less class.

Aren't there two types of gypsies (neither have to do with Rome - forgive my ignorance - I had to look it up!). Actually, most of them are Indian or Middle Eastern, right? From/via Eastern Europe?

There is actually a large group called Irish Travellers. Sadly I used to watch that show during a brief period where I lost me mind : -)
According to Wikipedia there is a large group in the US

Northern Ireland?: ?3,905 Great Britain?: ?15,000
Ireland?: ?29,573 United States?: ?10,000–40,000

OP here. I'm just trying to understand why they consider themselves non-Americans. If not American, what nationality are they?

They're speaking about culture here, not nationality. It's like the Amish (well, the opposite of the Amish) saying they didn't want their kids to marry Americans. The Roma are a people who originally came from India and migrated (usually because they were kicked out) through Egypt (hence the name Gypsies) and into Europe and then to the Americas. They are Americans, but try to preserve their heritage.

These people are so trashy. I can't even follow their drama, everyone is cousins with each other.

Does anyone know how they can even afford those ridiculous weddings?
