Tell me about your kid entering and leaving pep - what changes were made?

My son is going to the va equivalent of pep next year in an integrated class, 6:6 model. He's 4.5. He's old to be going apparently. Did anyone else start at this age? His main issues are impulsivity, extreme, hyperactivity and lack of attention. I'm wondering if this class can help with those. He does not participate in group activities and has a very limited attention span. He has difficulty with peer interactions because of the impulsivity. I'd love to hear some stories of whether the school helped. We're doing aba and ot and speech right now. Speech for social pragmatics. Ot for a major fine motor delay.

I don't know how much a preschool special Ed class can help his impulsivity and Inattentiveness especially at age 4-5. There is only so much a teacher can do to help what is really a brain chemistry issue. One of my dc has shared classrooms with many severe ADHD kids but is not ADHD herself. Almost all the kids we know end up on medication with the parents wishing they had medicated sooner (not saying that's the right choice for you, just being honest).

Why are you doing ABA for a kid with no autism dx?

Behavioral therapy is not just for autism.

We are working on impulse control and defiance with ABA. It seemed to fit better than other behavioral therapy. I will keep the board posted if we see any actual progress. At week 3.

If anyone did medication for impulsivity - more than hyperactivity although I guess this is a form of it? - was it effective and what did you use? Holding off until 5 but he is making it hard.

Is there a medical reason to wait until 5

He has epilepsy, we think (getting a second opinion as he has had just 2 seizures, and none in six months), so we are waiting on figuring that out.

Pep should be great. The staff are usually amazing and the class size is small. Good luck op!
