Bike Riding

How old was your child when he/she learning to ride a bike? We are thinking of starting this process this week, but my son is somewhat uncoordinated. I'm wondering how old kids are when parents typically take off the training wheels and how long did it take before they master the skill?

Almost 7. Get a tag a long.

My 6.5 year old is learning to ride now. We've gone out a couple of times. She's getting it.

3, he had a balance bike first and got straight onto his normal bike and rode away. Maybe try removing pedals for a few days first so your kid can learn to balance and then put them back on

I love balance bikes.

Training wheels are evil.

Agree. My son was 4. My second son is starting on the balance bike now at 1.5.

+1 also 3yo for my dd after a year on the balance bike. Not coordinated with things like balls, but great on bikes. No training wheels.

DS was 4 when he was able to ride without training wheels. He was very motivated. DD isn't that interested and is almost 6. She still has training wheels. Neither had balance bikes.

We got a balance bike for my eldest when he was 2.5.
He was an ex-preemie with significant delays (including gross motor and coordination), but apparently no balance issues. He could ride a normal bike without training wheels at 5.

We did the same thing for DC2 and she could ride a bike at 4.

We didn't actually use training wheels. Just went from balance bike to normal bike.

DC1 was 4. DC2 is 9 and is not even close yet.

6.5. I heard that riding a scooter will improve balance and DD preferred her scooter for about a year prior to learning to ride a bike without training wheels. Hopped on the bike this summer and was good to go in less than a week.

Interesting, my daughter (who is just starting to get the hang of the bike) also just started riding her scooter. Wonder if that helped.

Same as PPs, both of my boys were on a balance bike at 2 and a regular bike at 3-4. We actually tried training wheels once and found that they really messed the kids up - you can't lean the bike to turn, or stay upright going across a hill, even a slight one. They crashed more with training wheels than without. Take the pedals of and let them practice scooting around with their feet on the ground, they'll start balancing without even realizing it.

Some kids are less fearful than others. if your son is older than 4, don't hold back, just let him try. Get a bike that is adjustable so the seats go higher. Don't forget a helmet.

We started with a balance bike. If you see how some kids ride the balance bike down a steep hill, you might get scared. Balance bike allow them to practice using their feet to balance. I'm sure if you skip balance bike, it will be ok. Your son will pick up sooner or later. I would not get it just because everyone else is getting it.
