Disparity between AP score and class grade

Is this common?
My kid got an AP score of 4 in a class that he got a D in. This does not make any sense to me. He will be retaking the class in college.

Anyone have insight about this?

Class grades include things like participation, homework completion, etc.

Same thing happened to DD! If I look at her grades across the year/semesters, the final grade she got is not an average of her two semester grades. It appears to be whimsy which her teacher definitely seemed to promote. Clearly the AP score was not factored in.

Are you sure your kid turned in all of their work, and on time?

My DCs' AP test correlate to their grades Bs=4s and As=5s. 100% correlation in our family. 11 AP tests and counting.

Does your DC get nailed for homework and other things that are not relate to knowing the information? Did he forget to hand in a project?

I don't know if it's common, but it's definitely possible.

The AP score reflects the knowledge and skill demonstrated during the 3 hours of the exam. The class grade reflects the knowledge, skills, behavior, participation, timeliness, etc, on the work done for the class during 9 months.

I got all 4 and 5 on ap tests and a d and a c in the classes in HS. I was lazy and didn't want to do the final project. The st class I retook in college and just got credit for the English one.

I got a D in AP Physics, but a 5 on the exam. I didn't do the homework. I definitely didn't retake the class in college; I knew the material.

OP here, thanks for the replies. I know there were packets he didn't turn in to class so I'm sure that affected his grade. He worked with a tutor to prepare for the AP test. Is my thinking correct that he should retake the class in college to show that he can do the classwork and to make sure he has a good foundation?

No, the AP score earns the credit. He should continue with a higher level course - and do that coursework diligently!

This really depends on the college/department. Many won't give credits for APs but will less you place out of intro requirements.

My brother got a high score on his AP Physics exam and got a D in the class. Par for the course for him. Very intelligent but couldn't be bothered to do the work.
