I'm going overseas with my 20 month/old toddler and I can't afford to pay 2 tickets. (I mean NO WAY)
Does anybody have any suggestions of things to do during the flight? I'm sure she'll sleep for the most part, but what else can I try if everything else (snacks, dvd, sippy cup) fails? Any suggestions? |
I should also have mentioned that the flight duration is about 10h and we do stop in Atlanta for 3 hours. |
Wow. I do understand the cost issues, and I'm sure you already know that traveling with a 20 month old as a lap toddler is going to be tough. I'm about to start my 19 month old with these crayons, they are fun to stack and also pretty much only color on paper.

No offense, but any chance you can just stay home? I say this with concern, OP, but that is going to be a ROUGH flight for you both. |
I've done this twice and didn't have any problems. Be sure you have enough food that your toddler will eat. Plan for take off and landing ear popping - sippy cup or bottle. If I can, I sit near an aisle so that I can get out and walk around a lot. I'm not a Benedryl fan so I never did it, but it's something many people consider. There was so much going on, my kids didn't even play with the toys I brought.

No real advice, but just wanted to offer some reassurance that it's doable, especially if you have a laid-back child...I just came back from a 10-hour (each way) trip to Europe with my 19-month old DD. We did buy her a seat, but she ended up sitting (or sleeping) in my (or DH's) lap during the ENTIRE flight! The biggest waste of $1000 that I have ever incurred ![]() |
OP here: No, no chance of staying at home, but thanks for everybody else who's offering help. The crayons actually look pretty promising! |
PP here (19:29). A friend just showed me this website, and I've only glanced at it, but I think it has some intriguing suggestions.
http://www.deliciousbaby.com/ Also, make the most of your diaper change trips to the bathroom - I thought they would be difficult and miserable, but I found instead that both my kids liked being somewhere different, if only for 5 or 10 minutes. And bring some antibacterial wipes to use after she explores in there. ![]() |
A friend of mine also gave me this great piece of advice, pack your diapers and wipes in a ziploc so you only have to take that into the bathroom instead of the whole diaper bag. |
BIG FAT YES on the ziploc with diapers and wipes (and I usually put in a changing pad and diaper cream, if necessary). It's about a million times easier to carry to the bathroom, and you have the added bonus of not getting gross stuff all over your diaper bag. |
OP here again: Thanks guys, you're being very helpful and I'm starting to feel a little more confident about this whole thing! If anybody has more suggestions, please keep them coming! |
I am glad I found your posting. I am actually traveling overseas tomorrow with my 17-month daughter, with one seat for two. I am scared about the whole thing, but I tried to find several new (and small) toys that she will enjoy and books that she has not read yet (with flaps). I am also planning on taking as much food for her as possible. I am also taking some Benadryl with me, just in case, but I really hope I won't need it. Good luck, I will let you know what works and does not work once I am back! |
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I hope you have a great trip and please let me know how it goes!!! Good luck!!!

I'll be flying 3.5 hours with a 22 mo old. Not 10 hours, but I can relate OP. I'm hoping for a free seat next to us. Hope you can get one too. |
OP, I'm one of the PPs and have traveled a bunch with little kids. Do you mind if I ask you a few things? How long is the flight, where are you going, and is it overnight?
I might have some further suggestions based on your answers. Also, in your ziploc with diapers and wipes, you might want to put in a few diaper disposal bags. |
