| My 14 year old DD has free time over the next two weeks, probably about 8 free days. So does her friend. They would love to volunteer somewhere. Know it is short notice, but does anyone have any suggestions? They have to be able to bike there, so NWDC or Bethesda would be most feasible. |
|
They could offer to be mothers helpers for free to a mom who may need help.
Run errands for elderly in your neighborhood. Mow a lawn or two of someone who could use the help. Ask around the neighborhood |
| Can they weed? |
| Say no to drugs |
| Really, 14 year old would love to volunteer on free days during the summer, Bethesda teens? I am not buying it. Have them volunteer to clean their rooms and let your DD enjoy the summer break. |
| Let your kid enjoy her summer. My 17 year old has over 2 months off. |
| You sound like a slave driver. |
Finally a person who lets her kid have a summer off. While I am not against a summer job for teens, but I am also in favor of summer boredom. My 14 year old never once came and told me she really wants to volunteer during her summer break. She did tell me she wants to stay up and sleep in though. |
| Yeah, let's discourage kids who want to be helpful and encourage them to be lazy instead. For the sake of summer? |
For the sake of childhood! Kids grow and mature when they rest and have unstructured time, they are not robots. Let's phrase this right, let's discourage overbearing and overachieving parents ruining their kid's childhood. |
Okay, I can appreciate your revised thought. But if a kid is looking for a chance to do good, I think it's important to encourage them. Right now this world could use a little more "help your neighbor" mentality and less "just take care of yourself all the time" |
Agree. This is the one time in their lives they can do that. Soon ds will be in university and life will be harder. |
| Whatever you do, do not encourage them to do unpaid grunt work around the neighbourhood like helping mothers and yard work in this heat. Ridiculous. |
| I do think they should get paid if they babysit or mow lawns. |
