| My local elementary and middle schools (Hyattsville Elementary School and Hyattsville Middle School) are scheduled to be renovated. Does anyone know what happens during a renovation? Do they do the work in the summer when school's out? Do the students have to put up with construction noise during school hours? Do the students move to a different school for the duration of the renovations. If that's the case, are kids bussed to the new location? |
| Good question. No kids but I live nearby. |

DH works for a GC and does a lot of public school renovations for all of the major school systems in the area. The answer is it depends on the contract. Most contracts try and use the summer when the kids are out of school. Once August comes, he's done evenings/nights/weekends only or block renovations where they close off a certain area of the building. The school system decides if the kids will remain in the building or use a temporary facility.
The kids are kept away from the construction but probably hear the noise if construction is occurring during the school day. |
| I asked a member of the County Council about this and the current expectation is the students will be moved somewhere else (and that it will be a big political fight over where they go). |
