Can swimming make you lose weight?
If so, how? Whats the routine? |
I'm sure it does for some people...but for me it made me hungry. Sorry, Op! |
I lost 35 lbs swimming and watching what I ate when I was in my late 20s. I loved it. |
Yes, especially if you don't increase your calorie intake vs when u were not swimming. |
Lots of swim workouts online |
+1. but it will sculpt those arms. |
Triathlete (amateur) here.
I find that swimming gives me the least "bang for my buck" as far as calorie burn/calories consumed. Swimming doesn't burn that many calories, considering the fact that I am RAVENOUS after I am done and want to eat everything. Biking and running burn way more calories and I don't feel as hungry. |
It's not the swimming that increases appetite, per se, it's the cold water.

It's not the swimming that increases appetite, per se, it's the cold water. It may be the cold water but, in the end I'm swimming in it. Cold showers don't make me hungry. Therefore, I think it is the swimming that makes me hungry not just being in the cold water. |
I got back to distance swimming last year after several years away from it. I was swimming about five times a week and worked up to doing a 2K and a one mile open water swim by late summer. I didn't lose any weight, but I did improve my cardiovascular fitness and overall muscle tone. I agree with a previous post that surmised running or cycling being a better calorie burn. I also suffer from insane hunger after swim workouts and probably put way too many calories back in the tank.
The cold water effect on metabolism is also a valid discussion point. The Four Hour Body book and lifestyle keys in on this. I've seen no benefit for me, however. |
I used to swim and was in great shape, but I did a lot of others things, too. The fastest I've ever lost weight was when I was walking on a treadmill. I have a stationary bike now, and it's not as effective for me. |
I probably can't find the thread anymore but there was a thread somewhere in bodybuilding forums where someone put a post with a link about how swimming wasn't good for weight loss.
I don't think this is it but reading through some responses it might be along the same lines: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=2272451 Then again when trying to find that thread, I came across a bunch of threads where people responded about how great swimming is and how it's good for weight loss. |
Could you link any please? Not the op, but I've been looking for water workouts without luck. Most are 2-3 minute snippets, but maybe I'm googling/searching the wrong key words. |
It used to make me hungry, but when I started swimming first thing in the morning, I found it had the opposite effect, took the hunger away. I find nothing compares to swimming for fully body workout and upper body toning.
Now running on the other hand ... that makes me hungry. I think part of the hunger factor is trying something new. |
