Expectant and Postpartum Moms
I have care first blue choice insurance and I have to do a HSG procedure. If you did this procedure and were pleased with the Radiologist or the Doctor who performed the procedure, please share the name of the facility. Is it a painful procedure? Thanks.
Dr. Sacks at Columbia Fertility Associates at 25th & M. The actual procedure is at the Washington Radiology Center, but Dr. Sacks performs the procedure himself and will tell your results immediately. Good luck - found out I was pregnant 3 weeks later.
I was with Shady Grove and had this done at Fairfax Hospital. It was much more painful than I thought it would be. Have someone with yu if possible. I didn;t and certainly made it home okay but I wish I ahd my husband or someone else w/ me. Good luck.
I was also with Shady Grove & had the HSG done at Alexandria Hospital. Don't remember the names of the doctor & nurse (nor was I allowed to choose a particular doctor) but both were very pleasant & competent, especially the nurse. It did hurt a bit more than I had expected, but the pain was momentary. On the plus side, we got pregnant right afterwards!
I went to Dominion Fertility and had an HSG at Virginia Hospital Center. Everyone was very nice and friendly, and the nurse showed me the screen so I could see exactly what the radiologist was seeing. For me the procedure did not hurt at all. I barely felt a thing, but I realize different people have had different experiences.
I had it done at Johns Hopkins b/c it is through my husband's procedure. The HSG was not as painful as the endometrial biopsy, but every woman's responds differently. No one informed me to take Ibuprofen before the EB, but was warned to take it before the HSG. I took 4 ibuprofen about 2 hours before the procedure and 2 more a half hour before it was conducted. All and all it was not that bad. I was informed that the pain level would dependent on your tubes and whether there is any blockage. I had little blockage. We conceived immediately after the HSG. Good Luck!!
I found the procedure painful and did not have blocked tubes. However I have severe endometriosis so any time I get cramps it can get very painful. I took 2 ibuprophen before hand (btw -- I think the most you can take is 800 mg every 6 hours). The pain doesn't last a long time, but the dye does cause some cramping as your body wants to expel it. I was glad DH was with me, but a friend would do in a pinch.

It really depends on your insurance, so check with them who you can go see. I went to Washington Radiology (they have many offices).
It was really painful for me, but I think I have a tilted uterus and maybe had some blockages. I took Advil before..and needed to take more after. The doctor who did it was brief and quick about it, but not exactly friendly. The radiologist was nice enough and explained a lot, which was helpful. HTH. Best of luck to you. |

I second the rec for Columbia Fertility. I had mine done with Dr. Abassi who I think is fabulous. She works out of the Bethesda office. She doesn't do it right in the office, but in one of the two radiology places in the building.
**I've had many friends who have seen Dr. Sacks in that practice and have nothing but rave reviews about him!!!! |
To 17:52 poster, I would like to know if your ogbyn did the procedure along with the Radiologist. I called Va Hospital center and they told me that Radiologist does the procedure then I read here from others that their obgyn did it. I am with Shady Grove and I called them serveral times to ask these kind of questions but did not get any answers. I alredy do not have a good feeling about them. I wanted to go with Dominion Fertility but unfornuantly, they do not take my insurance.
I had my procedure done with Shady Grove at their Rockville office. One of their RE did it, NOT a radiologist. If you have an assigned doctor or nurse, are you calling them directly? I always went directly to the source when I worked with them, and with all the money I was paying I never felt bad about leaving multiple messages. Hope you get the answers you need.
