Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
My 14-1/2-month-old daughter wakes up every night now, between about 10:30 - 12:30, crying. She won't stop until I move her to a mattress on the floor in her room or to our bed, where she'll fall back asleep immediately. She refuses to continue sleeping in her crib. Is this too young or unsafe to leave a crib? She is sleeping with us (parents) many nights for half the night. Not a habit I wanted to get into, but sometimes that's all that will get her to sleep again. I'm not sure what the sudden issue is with her crib, feeling alone, or the fact that she's grown so much and is continually waking up from hitting the edges, or doesn't like being restrained by the bars? Her daycare thinks maybe her cold/congestion has been affecting her sleep, but this difficult sleep pattern has been going on about 2 weeks now.

"usually"? Maybe between 18-24 months. But, is your DD walking well by herself already? If so, go ahead and make the switch. As you stated, she goes back to sleep if put on a mattress on the floor in her room. Most people would suggest it's too early to move. But, I would argue otherwise. If she is feeling independent and stubborn, then why not go ahead and move to a toddler bed. The only catch is to make sure the bedroom is really babyproof, and the mattress/rail is low enough to the floor that an accidental fall out of bed won't be too painful. Rails don't prevent all falls either. Put a bunch of pillows/quilts on the floor next to the toddler bed for a while, too, to cushion the falls. After a couple weeks she won't fall. We have a need to keep ours in her room at night because the gate at the top of the stairs stays open for the cat. So, we bought a cheap little suspension gate to put up in the door frame to prevent wandering child. It would take some real effort for her to knock it over, and if she does I'm sure the noise would wake us up.
BTW, did she recently start napping on a cot at daycare? If so, this might be influencing her feelings of wanting new found freedom. |
three years and three months and still in crib and not rushing it as I like keeping her safely contained. All kids are different though.
My first was almost 4. My second, who will be three in a couple of months, is still in a crib.
Our 27-month old is still in the crib. Our ped said not to move him until at least 3 if possible.
Mine moved at almost 3.5 yrs. He was perfectly happy in the crib, never crawled out and we never had a reason (i.e., another baby) to push him out any earlier.
Mine moved at 20 months. He basically climbed out of the crib then. Once he did that, he wasn't going back into the crib.
Moved DS at a year as he was climbing out of his crib. Never looked back and it was fine. He stayed on a mattress on the floor for about 6 months before we put up bed rails. A lot of the responses so far seem late to me based on my circle of friends.
When they can climb out of the crib
In my mind, it's not a matter of being "late" or early in moving them out - it's whether or not there is a compelling reason or need (like you clearly had). |
Both of my children were 15 months.
My DS is still in a crib at 17 mo. However, I have read that once his belly button is at same height at the top of the crib railing, it's time to switch to a bed.
My 20 mo. old is stretching his leg as high as he can to see if he can get it over the top of the crib (no success yet) but even if he weren't doing this, I would get a bed in the next couple of months. I think it's odd to have a preschooler sleep in a crib or eat in a high chair. I moved my first to a twin bed before he turned two, and used a bed rail on the side away from the wall. We had no problems.
still going strong at 3. If it ain't broke - don't fix it.
