I moved into a new house and I'm hitting the kitchen in Dec. meanwhile there are gross 1980s oak cabinets. I'm going to paint them because I know they're going in 6 months.
So-of you could have kitchen cabinets of any color what would you pick? |
| Hitting = gutting |
| I wouldn't bother if they are going in six months. |
OP here-- I don't mind sanding, priming, painting, and poly coating. I've always wanted colored kitchen cabinets. Nows my chance. I don't have the guts to install red or blue cabinets for real. I'll just be installing boring white or grey. I'm leaning towards yellow, orange, or red. Thoughts? |
| Palest green. But then I'd want a wild, marble dark green backsplash / counter top. |
| I LOVE an orange kitchen - that's what I'd go for if you're leaning red/orange/yellow. |
| I would love turqoise!!! |
| this is dumb idea, you are going to dirty and dust up and paint cabinets for 6 months? |
Yep. It's fun and the colored cabinets will make me smile. |
Fun! But the marble is not in the budget-just paint. Great idea though. |

Oak has grain. Sand it well and get BM advance paint. No need for primer. If you don't redo them you might hate them- try Ivory Tusk-very pale cream -hint of yellow.

| White-ish |
| Oak is a bitch to paint. I normally just stain it darker because painting it is such a hassle with the grain. |
| Painting cabinets is a huge amount of work. And hard to look good. Instead I recommend General Finishes gel stain, you don't even need to remove cabinet doors, sand, or prime. Just use black and go right over the oak. Add new hardware if necessary. |
