Afterschool Activities

At what age did your child start afterschool activities? So far, we only participate in weekend programs. Curious as to when the afterschool stuff starts. A better question might be, how long were you able to avoid afterschool programs.

My 7 year old (just finished first grade) is pretty tired after school and refuses to try anything after school. My son is 5 and starting K in the fall and is desperate for after school activities... He'll have a full roster come fall. So, in my experience, it's kid dependent.

Mine started participating in after school enrichment activities at his school around first grade.

Are you doing these activities as part of an afterschool program, or you're taking your kids to lessons at different places?

I think his age group started practicing soccer during the week when he was in second grade. He's always gone to after school care because I work full time (single mom).

Third grade. But then they choose gymnastics team so it has been almost daily practice.

Depends on the child...

my older child gets up at the crack of dawn, so before school activities at school are a great fit (sadly, no fitness but he's done chess since KG at his ES)
younger child stays up late, so after school activities are no issue; KG for her too

My kids have done most of their afterschool activities at the school, during Extended Day. DS does a sport program (they rotate through different sports) and theater. DD has done a variety of classes including Kid Fitness, art, programming.

Outside of that, each does one rec sport at a time that has 1-2 practices per week in the evenings, plus a weekend game or practice.

They stuck to this schedule throughout elementary school.

Our kids are in aftercare til 6 pm at their DCPS. Their old school offered nothing much in the way of after school enrichment, so we did ballet on Saturdays. A lot of parents I met at the playground were doing Stoddert soccer and Washington Ballet. Their new school has all kinds of stuff - karate, robotics, yoga, choir etc. so when we switched they started doing more activities. K and 2nd grade respectively.

Started in K. Finished 2nd grade today, still does after school activities: chess and soccer. Will add rocket modeling next year.
