| I thought I posted once but I don't see it any more. Strange. Anyway, here it is again. My DS needs suppositories quite frequently to poop. He has started having over an hour of mucous dripping out of him at random intervals - so lots of time needed on the toilet. He also complains of "butt pain". He is 10. This did not used to happen. His BMs are not hard - we check every one because of severe constipation issues. Anyone have ANY idea what is going on? Poor kid just dreads the suppositories. But he needs them as the Exlax stopped working.. and Miralax caused incontinence. Please help. (And please don't remove this post!) |

I have responded before to posts about suppositories stating my opinion (backed up by doctor(s)) that use of glycerin suppositories on an ongoing basis is not harmful. We use them to help our child with low muscle tone almost every day. However, your situation sounds more concerning. There are more issues here than just suppository use. The mucus issue alone is very concerning.
I think the big picture needs to be checked here. So in summary, suppositories are fine. Your particular case seems to call out for more professional guidance. |
| Does the mucous occur randomly or after the suppository? I'm wondering if it's just the remains of the suppository if nothing else was passed. |
| Can you please take your child to the pediatrician and ask all these questions. If you are not satisfied with the pediatrician's response then take your child to a pediatric GI specialist. If you don't know what's going on medically with your child and it's an ongoing problem, don't ask random strangers online for medical advice ask the doctor. |
I agree. |
| My daughter has severe constipation. I do agree with PPs that you should be seeing a ped GI specialist. To me (and I am not a medical specialist) it sounds like there may be an impaction, or at minimum your son needs a full clean out. Good luck! |

OP here. It sounds like mucosal discharge following suppositories is not supposed to happen at all. For DS, it happens some times. When it happens, it can go on for a while which leaves him chained to the toilet.
DCUM: I am just checking in with those who may have experience. Of course we work with a pediatric GI. I posted while I await a call back. |
OP, If he's really backed up poop-wise, there may be blockage in the colon. So when you first do the suppository, most of the poop comes out, but maybe there's something still in there, that's coming out dribs and drabs. Maybe do the suppository on a Friday or Saturday evening if he doesn't need to be anywhere the next day and have him go to sleep with a depends in case there's any leakage. The one thing that I would suggest for the long term, is having him sit on the toilet for 5-10 minutes after he eats to help stimulate the elimination reflex. |

Why are your panties in such a twist? |
| With Miralax did you try adjusting the dose? We also had incontinence at first no it found that on 1/8 capful every other day, we were able to manage constipation issues. It's a fraction of recommended dose but it worked. |
??? Just trying to help the clueless OP who thinks the original post disappeared or was deleted. |
NP- It was actually originally posted in Special Concerns - I asked Jeff to move it to this board. |
