What I meant, was that it wasn't obvious to me in any way. I didn't know for a good while, and once I found out, it was too late, as I had already fallen for him.

Do you want sex or a relationship? Sure, some gay men might be willing to occasionally have sex with a woman. Most won't, but it isn't unheard of. A relationship is less likely, though there are always the rare cases of a gay guy who meets the exception to the rule (not limited to gay guys - there are straight women who end up with women, etc.)
As someone who has BTDT I would caution you to think long and hard even if he was into it because it's really pretty difficult.

For some people sexuality is more fluid. Some people may identify as gay but occasionally be interested in the opposite sex or vice versa because people get to choose how they identify.

But for the most part, if he says he is gay, it's not going to happen. But maybe he has straight friends, or you can figure out what you like about him and find a straight (or bi) guy who has those qualities.
