Prepaid cell phone for kids to share

My kids are 9 and almost 12. We were thinking of getting a pre-paid cell phone because there are several weeks over the summer where one is dropped off for swim team practice early while I drive the other to camp. Then a few weeks later the situation reverses. I don't want to just add a line to my contract at this point (not really sure I need to go that route yet, but I don't know). FWIW, I'm only interested in calling and texting. I was not planning on adding data at this point. What have you done? How has it worked?
