What happens in a playgroup?

Especially in those with very young babies where you meet in someone's home. Does the hostess organize some type of activities or is it just "free play"? Does the hostess serve food/drinks? How many people typically belong in one and how long is each meeting?
I realize that each playgroup probably sets its own "rules", but I am curious as to what is done typically. I'd appreciate it if someone could take the time to describe their experiences for a first-time mommy.

Our playgroup meets for about an hour, once a week. We take turns hosting at our respective houses. We have yet to have a planned activity, as the kids seem excited enough playing with each other's toys. We always offer drinks (water, soda, wine on occassion) and usually a snack like hummus, chips and dip, etc. We never set out to make any rules, and have just fallen into this routine.
