Parents in FCPS, do you kids know different parts of speech? If so, when was it taught?
My child is finishing up 2nd. I realized she didn't know what an adverb was. Never heard of one and couldn't pick it out of a sentence until I explained what it was. Once I explained it she got it but shouldn't this be taught in 2nd? If not, when? Was my kid just asleep when this was taught or not paying attention (very possible). She also didn't know what a preposition, conjunction, and interjection was, by name. She only knew nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives. |
| FCPS doesn't teach parts of speech at our school so not surprised. |
Ever??? |
| Our private school teaches that in 5th. I don't think I learned it until 7th growing up. |
|
a. it is not a big deal and kids probably do not need to be taught this at 2nd grade - I would rather they spend that time on producing more written, creative work (diary, journal, stories, etc.)
b. adverbs are a very messy category of words and can be defined more as what it is not than what it is. The trend is to define adverbs as *not* a verb, noun, adjective, etc |
I have been reading the "Words are Categorical" series with DD (1st grade) since FCPS doesn't teach it. She understands nouns, verbs and adjectives. But adverbs are beyond screwy. I am having trouble explaining it and I was an english major. |

I came to post about those books, too, PP! I didn't know the name of the series, I just know the author is Brian Cleary. (My boys loved those books. They're in late-ES and MS now.)
I find Schoolhouse Rock sets a good foundation, too. |
| Former second grade teacher and fcps does not have a formal parts of speech curriculum. Some teachers do teach parts of speech but not many. Second graders should only know nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns. |
Yes, see below from former 2nd grade teacher. They don't even call them adverbs if it is talked at all. They are called descriptive words. |
Most descriptive words would be adjectives. I learned about parts of speech when I studied a second language starting in middle school. The same was true for my kid, in a different school district. |
|
As far as I can tell, Arlington never ever ever teaches parts of speech, which seriously undermines learning other languages. My kid is in German, and I have had to teach some grammar to get him through it.
|
| Third grade is where it used to be taught. |
That's where Common Core has it. It has using adverbs in 2nd and knowing what they are in 3rd. Not that VA uses Common Core. |
That's the best and usual way to learn parts of speech in English, when learning another language. |

Oh, yes they do. Adverbs are part of the 6th grade curriculum in the state of VA. Adverbs are complex and would not be easily understood by a 2nd grader. --an APS teacher |
