Pack n Play Bassinet - It's so puffy, is it actually safe?

Anonymous
FTM here, baby's due in a few weeks and we're hoping for her to sleep on the pack n' play bassinet for the firs 3 months or so (pnp pad raised to bassinet level, not the newborn napper thing). I noticed that the pad even when velcroed down is not quite... taut and there is some puffiness that we can't get out. I got a fitted sheet and a waterproof cover to put on the pnp mattress pad and the puffiness feels even worse when those are on. Did those of you who used a pnp bassinet for their newborns notice this issue? Was it a problem at all with suffocation hazard?

I wonder the same thing about my pottery barn bassinet!

If you read the literature, they say that it's n

We've been using it for my son since birth (3 months now) and it's been fine. I stopped using the mattress pad and sheet because I didn't like the puffiness. He just goes into the plastic pad. He doesn't care and I've felt like he's safer that way.

No one else with any feedback on the pack n play bassinet for newborn sleeping? Again just want to clarify I'm not talking about the newborn napper attachment. Just plain old pnp pad raised to bassient level. Curious if it worked for you and if you used sheets etc. or had any issues with the pad having air pockets etc.

I read that you should avoid the pad and just use the bassinet (not the napper) with sheets.

We use it with a thin firm foam mattress that is made for the graco pack and play.

We just used it with a fitted PnP sheet. We only had our baby in it for about 12 weeks and he couldn't roll, so I wasn't concerned about suffocation.

He was a little Houdini and broke out of every swaddle etc. so that did worry me.

OP here, avoid the pad that the pnp comes with? We've just put the pad that the pnp comes with on the bassinet level. Didn't buy a separate mattress and ours doesn't have a napper attachment thing. Just a simple pnp.

LOL @ houdini. I think I'm going to try to just make the fitted sheet work sans the waterproof quilt/cover, seems to add additional softness/poofiness. Atleast the sheet would just work with the air pockets that are weirdly just a part of the pnp pad.

I used the "pad" (which is really the mattress, right?) with the basinette with a sheet on it without any issues. Not sure what you mean by puffiness. I guess it wasn't perfectly taut because from what I remember it's foldable, but it wasn't a problem. When my baby moved down to the lowest level, I then put a mattress from Amazon on top of the "pad".

Yup that's what I was talking about! Just got nervous when I saw that there were air bubbles that wouldn't really stay down (wish I could describe better) but it makes sense that it's because they need enough give in the polyester material to fold that pad. Glad to hear it wasn't an issue for anyone!! This nervous FTM thanks you

My first didn't like the PnP on the bassinet level because it wasn't flat, there was a slight U-shape bend to it. With my second (we are using it bedside after she grew out of a bassinet) we are skipped the bassinet level and went straight to the mattress at the bottom.
