What is the appropriate response to this? |
"All good things, I hope!" |
"Wel that's nice" or "lucky me" but Said sincerely and without snark. |
You say, "Nothing bad, I hope!" and then the person tells you the (hopefully) not-bad thing they were saying about you. |
+1 This is exactly what I say |
If it's not in a professional setting I usually joke and say "Don't believe a word of it!" Usually they'll respond with the gist of what they were saying. If it's a more formal setting, I just smile pleasantly. |
They would tell you they were talking about you if it was bad things. Usually it's good things . |
*wouldn't |
+2 I think this is the standard response, like the call-and-response "How are you?" "I'm fine" |
"How flattering." |
"only the bad parts are true!"
"that grilled cheese thing? All true!" |
"uhhh..... just remembered somewhere I have to be..."
(looking at imaginary watch.) |
a self-deprecating joke. |
Cool. What's up? |
"Lies! All lies!" |
