New England Fall Getaway

Anonymous
I would love to getaway to New England for a long weekend this fall with my husband and two school aged children. What's a great location? Maine? Vermont? Massachusetts? I'm debating between getting a cabin or lake house rough VRBO or staying at a resort so my husband and I can get spa treatments and relax. The kids would enjoy hiking, we love seeing fall foliage and enjoying good food. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You can also rent a condo by the resort and have access on the resort's amenities.

Agreed.

Also CT is spectacular and not so far up the coast.

As PP said, Woodstock/Quechee area is great, or stay in Norwich, VT/Hanover. Nice inns with nice restaurants and amenities. If you are coming by air, you need to drive from Burlington, Manchester, NH or Hartford, CT.

Also Burlington! Lots of beautiful scenery and stuff to do in the Champlain Valley. Easy airport access. Close enough to Stowe area for hiking and activities like Ben and Jerry's.

Pioneer Valley of MA, Amherst/Northampton up through to Brattleboro area, and west on Route 9 to Wilmington and Mt. Snow, or up 30 toward Startton. Or west to NW MA (Mohawk Trail, route 2, Greenfield to Williamstown) Shelburne Falls is outstanding!

Remember, the foliage peaks do run north to south, but also change in reference to elevation. Wind and rain will affect color and viewing. Columbus Day tends to be peak in Southern Vermont and Berkshires, but definitely variable.
