A few of my friends have used these to learn their genetic makeup, so my mom, DH, and I are going to give them a try too.
I'm just excited and want to hear about others' experiences. Have you discovered anything unexpected? |
| No experience, op, but there have been numerous threads on this. You may have luck searching the archives. Good luck, this does sound exciting! |
Well, I found out that my "Cherokee" heritage that the family talks about turned out to be African
|
| I've been wanting to do this! I hope that someone posts their interesting findings such as the PP who always thought she had Cherokee heritage! |
| I want to do this too but am not sure which the best one is and what info they give. My DH did 23andme years ago and got tons of info on his health but I think they stopped doing that. Are they any that give ancestral and health info? |
| I started as thread on this a while back and when I heard that enough people found it useless and generic I decided it wasn't worth the money. I am very curious to see what responses you get though because I do want to know if things have improved. My grandfather and grandmother were adopted so there are some questionmarks there that I would love to have answered. |
| My mom did it and a cousin on my dads side. Neither of them were results I expected. I thought there would be more Scandinavian and British and there was some; just not as much as I thought. I anticipate my results will be similar...higher percentage of generic Western European and less of the things I was told all my life I should be high in. My kit is in processing. They received it April 21 and started processing the dna on May 9, so I guess I'll have the results in a couple weeks or so. |

Yes, I did both 23 and me as well as Ancestry. I did the 23 and me when it had a good amount if info. Ancestry just confirmed the 23 and me ethnicity stats, but I think more people use Ancestery.com so if you are looking for relatives, you will find them here.
|
OP here. I did do a search, but only one post came up. Sometimes the search function seems incomplete or wonky. Can you post the link to your thread? |
|
I did this and found the results fascinating and pretty accurate. They listed all the countries that I knew I had ties to, even remotely. It was very cool for my kids to see it, as they've always been interested in things like ancestry.
It took about five weeks after mailing it in to get the results. |
| What does all of this cost? |
|
NP here, there are lots of threads on this, try searching 23andMe
Short story is I think they are great, but see if you can find our old threads before I start typing it out all over again... |

The various kits are all priced out on their websites. |
