I'm a working parent and need to get my errands in on the weekends. I'm sort of baffled by the fact that major area malls don't open until 11am (Montgomery) or even noon (Tysons.) I know the history of blue laws, grew up in MA when they were in effect, and I'm totally supportive of religious observance - my kids go to weekly religious ed and services on Sundays. But noon just seems punitive. Last time I went without checking and Montgomery Mall was packed at 1030am full of people waiting to get into stores. And yes, I know I could go on Saturdays but w/multiple kids & sports & birthday parties, sometimes I need to do something useful on Sunday as well. Are there laws that still prohibit earlier openings? |
I think it's nice that these places gives their employees the opportunity to go to church. |
Amazon Prime. Done. |
Agree. I work retail at a freestanding store in mock (think world market or REI or Best Buy) and we open at 10 on Sunday
Our store is PACKED from the minute it opens and there are always 3-10 people waiting at the door who didn't realize that we weren't open earlier. IS there a special county law applicable only to malls or something? Because you can be sure that the tenant companies and Westfield aren't being sweet and thoughtfully choosing to let their employees go to Mass even though they'd like to be making more profit. I bet they're prohibited in some way .... |
*in MoCo. Not mock |
So many places don't open until 10 even on weekdays! It's so annoying. |
I'd imagine it's a business decision- not enough customers to make it worth opening earlier. Most stores do open earlier during the holiday season. |
Exactly. I'm sure they've run the cost/benefit analysis a million times to figure out ideal hours to maximize profit. |
Chill, OP. Stop for a Chik Fil A and you will feel much better. |
Lol! I seem to always crave them on a sunday. |
I'm the OP - I do use Amazon Prime but unfortunately it's not a reliable way to get new shoes for my 7yo. And what's useful about the mall is that I can kill a bunch of birds with a single outing - fit him for shoes, return a skirt, buy some eyeliner, some see house stuff in person that I've ogled on the interwebs. I can go to a bunch of individual stores in strip malls, which seem to be open earlier. But it's a much greater hassle to drag an unwilling kid around like that, and a big waste of time and gas to drive and park at six different places. |
Target. Open 8am to 11pm today. |
Have you worked retail before? Just because a store opens at 10 AM on a weekday, doesn't mean employees come in at 9:55 AM. Employees can get stocking done before customers can walk in, and that is partly why stores open later. Also, stores are open till 8 PM (at least) which helps the office workers get to a store after work. I think it is good that malls open at 11 AM on Sunday, as someone said, gives employees a chance to go to church and managers to work out the schedule so there is a balance between the non church and church going employees. Some of y'all need to get out of your little bubbles and think outside the box. |
I remember when nothing was open on Sundays so if I have to wait until 11am, so be it. Heck, you could order a few different pairs of shoes on Zappos, etc and they will be here by tomorrow. If you need them today, that's most likely poor planning on your part. |
since you brought up thinking outside of the box, what if your religious day falls on a friday or saturday of the week? |
