Niece is thinking about this for undergrad. Good, not great, student from New York. TIA.

Not sure its worth the hassle of getting there from NY. Ok, depending on others choices, if transportation allows.

Why? Can she go to C of C or UNCW instead?

Why? Mostly instate students go there.

It's a glorified commuter school. Tell her to look at COFC, Winthrop, Wofford if she's interested in SC.
UNC-W if looking at beach-ish
CNU in Virginia.

If looking at sports Coastal has some stronger programs than the others mentioned. Football was top 10 in FCS last year and scheduled to move up to FBS division in a year. Women's Lax good. Other strength there is golf management. Lots of ties to the golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area for placement.

Really if you're looking for academics you're not likely to pick Coastal over Wofford which would be the top academic school in the state. College of Charleston beautiful but no football. UNCW good draw for basketball but again no football. CNU an interesting comparison but much further from the beach and D3 sports. Coastal's easy to get into, nice weather and comparatively upper end athletics. To a high school senior that can't look so bad, particularly coming from NY in the winter.

I know a few MoCo students who went on to Coastal Carolina and were very happy there.

I'm from SC and it's not well-regarded. It's a school of last resort.

Pretty much. I've been amazed that people from MoCo and the northeast go there. I guess it's good if you want the college experience instead of community college.

I had 5 friends go there together from Ohio. They all loved it and are successful now. Kind of a random place that go, but it worked for them.

I've heard it's for rich kids who are interested in partying rather than getting an education.

OP here. Thanks for the feedback. CCU looks like it would be a good "safety" school for her, but think she should aim a bit higher. BTW, she is interested in their Intelligence and National Security Studies program. Not sure what other schools offer something like that. Anyway, thanks again for the responses.
