Broken nail

Anonymous
I know, sounds funny.

One of my dogs somehow managed to break his "thumb" nail. There was blood, then it stopped and he seemed to be ok. Two days later and he's still nursing it. On closer inspection, there is a break across the top.

Is this something that will resolve itself or is this something I need to take him in for? I feel like I need a punch card for the vet... we were just there!

TIA!

You should take him to the vet.

My cat broke one of her claws off, and I thought it would heal/grow back in time, but it never got better and it hurt her. When I took her to the vet finally, she had to have the claw removed on that one toe. (Yes, I know their paws are different, but not so very different, and it is better to be sure).

Thanks for the reply, that's been my gut feeling. The claw is still attached (although I don't want to touch it to check how well attached because I know it hurts). I'll have to see if we can get into the vet this afternoon or tomorrow.

I would tend to think that it would heal, although it would take a while as the nail grew out.

Not exactly the same, our dog tore her dewclaw half out in a dog fight with an off-leash dog while out for a walk. It was bleeding a bit, she was constantly licking it. I took her to the vet, who said that it needed to come off, and they removed the nail. It took months, but it eventually regrew and now is just the same as her other one.

Take him to the vet. Our dog broke his nail and we thought he was okay since he didn't show any signs of pain, but then he developed a nail bed infection that needed antibiotics.

Any updates, OP?

OP here. I called for an afternoon appointment. He spent the morning hiding in his crate, and he growled at my other dog when she went towards him (SOOOO not like him). I brought him in... I had checked his nail a couple of times and it was still attached but when the vet tried to inspect it he touched it and it went flying across the room. (Cured!) I think between licking it and bumping it a couple of times it loosened even more so it was barely hanging on.

No signs of infection and its clotted. Now that its removed he's back to normal. So he's ok. Vet sent us away without charging us (love our vet).
