what should a child who is not an infant wear for Catholic baptism

We're getting our kids baptized some time later this year but they're already 2 and 4 boys. I just don't want to put them into a gown. White suits a la Tom Wolfe ok?

My dad was baptized Catholic as an adult and he wore black pants, white button down and a white silk tie. (aka doesn't have to be 100% white)

For toddler boys I often see rompers or white pants and a white shirt.

DS 1 was baptized when he was 10 months old. He wore a shorts and collared shirt combo. Both white, of course. MIL got it on Amazon.

DS 2 was baptized at 16 months. He wore a jumper combo - jumper/overalls with white cotton shirt - both white.

For kids 2 and 4 - i'd go with the white shorts and collared shirt combo.

OP here. Thanks! White shorts/shirt sound great, and they can wear it all more than once

OP go to a consignment shop like kid to kid and they'll have lots of appropriate stuff for cheap.

Fwiw I baptized both my kids late - the first at about 9m, but he was huge, so I had to hunt the internet to find a baptismal gown that would fit. We didn't get around to baptizing the second until he was 4yo. We had him wear a blue blazer, tie and khakis. It was all fine, but bear in mind at that age the priest put him in a white altar boy gown for the ceremony, so the blue blazer was kind of pointless.

They can wear anything that resembles church clothes but if you wanted to be somewhat traditional I would put them in white shirts. Maybe with khaki or seersucker shorts/pants or something.

That's what my older kid wore at Holy Trinity in G'town.

Where did you find the gown for your baby boy? I'd like our DS to wear a gown, but everything I have seen is SO girly, not unisex looking at all.

The outfit is not important, nor does it have to be white.

Right, and you don't have to wear a wedding dress and if you do, it doesn't have to be white either. Some people like to follow traditions and customs, though.

We baptized both our girls at ages 3 and 2 respectively, because we had adopted them from China at those ages. Thus, they could obviously not fit into the family christening gown, which was first worn by my maternal grandmother and her siblings. So I dressed my girls in nice dresses and, for the moment itself when the priest applied the chrism oil to their foreheads and poured the water over their foreheads, I draped the family christening gown over the front of them.

Hope this helps.

I am catholic and at my parish it is a tradition for preteen and teen girls to wear white infant style outfits for their baptisms at easter vigil.A white, poofy, top of the knees, short sleeve dress and bonnet or a white infant style gown and bonnet is worn with lace socks or tights and white 'mary jane' shoes. To be more traditional, most parents do a cloth diaper and plastic pants under the gown or dress, but i have seen some girls with a size 7 or 8 pampers on under neath.

There's a website called tinytux that has a lot of little suits in different colors for pretty cheap prices. It was the only place I was able to find a short-pant suit for my toddler for a wedding (other than some crazy expensive place). I'm pretty sure they had little white suits if you want to go that way. And they were washable!

I'm sorry, what? Are you saying people have their teenagers wear diapers for their baptisms? What on earth?

The little boy who was baptized at the same time as my DD wore khaki shorts and white short sleeve button down. No robes or diapers required.
