Would be very much appreciated. I would really like something that covers emotional, social, cognitive and behavioral development.
Thanks in advance |
I've been reading this book and I really enjoy it:
Secrets of the Baby Whisperer: How to Calm, Connect, and Communicate with Your Baby by Tracy Hogg |
What to expect the first year. This book seems to answer all of my questions. HTH |
It's hard to find exactly what you described Pollyanna, isn't it? Closest I have found is "First Feelings" by Stanley Greenspan.

My favorite child development series is "Watch Me Grow, I'm One (Two, Three). I can't think of the author's name right now. It describes a child's development during that particular year in terms of social, physical, emotional growth. Very easy to read and not too full of advice. |
Baby 411 is great for hitting the highlights. Dr. Brazelton's books are great for more in-depth info. |
I really found Dr Sears baby book the best. I do not like "what to expect", too harsh. |
Yes, I second Greenspan and Brazelton. |
I also liked Dr. Sears The Baby Book. It has good resource information - even if you don't read every page. I also cannot recommend The Happiest Baby on the Block (Karp) enough to read before you have a baby. Very helpful tips on how to calm a baby and keep crying to a minimum. It was also a very easy read. |
A lot of you-all seem to not be reading the title of the thread or the OP. She's not looking for general baby books or in particular how-to-soothe books. She is interested in child development. Baby Whisperer and Happiest Baby just do not fit that bill. Greenspan does, and Brazelton does. Sears is probably a mix of "how to" and summary of developmental milestones. If you are looking for a general book that touches on developmental stuff as well as the typical "how to" I'd also recommend Penelope Leach. |
The series "Your One Year Old" "Your Two Year Old" by Louise Bates Ames.
I also love The Blessing of A Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogel. |
Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, Birth to Age 5 by the American Academy Of Pediatrics provides a detailed month-by-month explanations of what to expect developmentally after birth. It's very thick but a great resource with ample recommendations. |
To me the AAP book has to cover a lot of ground since it is also a medical reference, and so with respect to developmental milestones it is really focused on the physical and cognitive ones (the purview of pediatrics) and less on emotional, social, behavioral, etc. It seems to me OP is looking for more than what the AAP book offers. (I could be reading into her post though and merely expressing my own difficulty in finding what I believe she's looking for.) |
I second the AAP book, I am a developmental psychologist and often times recommend this book as reference for all developmental aspects, including social, emotional, temperament, medical, cognitive, and physical. Great Reference!! |
Penelope Leach, Your Baby and Child
Lise Eliot, What's Going on in There? and the Ames and Ilg series mentioned above |
