MoCo downcounty consortium and private schools

Anonymous
I live in the downcounty consortium. I am perfectly happy with the elementary school. There is a lot of talk on these forums about concerns with the downcounty schools, and some have said that people in this area who can often choose private school for middle/high school when the problems start. I haven't seen that people in my neighborhood are rushing to private school for those grades, but I was curious which private schools people in this area would choose. There just don't seem to be that many around...

Peter Franchot (D20 delegate before he was State Comptroller) sent his kids to Lowell.

Current D20 Senator Raskin's oldest goes to Georgetown Day School. The other's don't have kids yet, but it will be interesting to see.

I know others going to Barrie and Thoton Friends, plus several who truck over to Sidwell and Green Acres.

Maryland Atty Gen. Gansler just moved his son from Sidwell to Landon.

If your kid gets into a magnet or choice (lottery) school for middle school, there may be no reason to go private. It depends on your kid and whether their needs are being met. Living downcounty myself, we had considered private if the magnets or choice schools didn't work out for DC.

Same poster here. I should add that once DC got into a great magnet, we turned down one of the top DC privates.

What are the chances of getting into a magnet or choice program?

Magnets start at middle school, which you may already know. We heard from the director of the Takoma Park math magnet that the odds this year were 1::5 or 1::6. If you live in Takoma Park your odds are a little better, although still fairly tough. I don't know about the Humanities magnet at Eastern, but I believe they're similar.

The odds for the choice programs (Loiederman et cetera) are a lot better, but I'm not sure exactly what they are so I won't waste your time by guessing here.... Maybe somebody else knows.

Bethesda is not part of the downcounty consortium

I don't think this is entirely accurate since Senator Raskin's 13 year old son was in the public middle school magnet program with my daughter - they're friends - at Eastern Middle School. They both just "advanced" to high school and my understanding is that his son will be going to a magnet high school in the MCPS system.

What is "downcounty consortium" anyway?

The Downcounty Consortium consists of 5 high schools (Blair, Einstein, Wheaton, Kennedy and Northwood); it has nothing to do with middle and elementary schools, nor does it have anything to do with students who live in Bethesda, including the Gansler kids.
