confused about Mexico and car insurance

I find the info on car rental insurance for Mexico very confusing... Does anyone have a good reliable source of info or want to give me their experience???

I know in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego, they sold car insurance as soon as you crossed the border and you can buy it for the day or however long you want it for.

Are you renting a car in Mexico? I would contact your own insurance company to see what they say, and then contact the rental car company. A travel agent who specializes in Mexico is probably another good resource.
