| My husband has been offered a job by a company in San Francisco. The position is mostly remote, so he will be working from home. Unfortunately he must go to the office 1-2 times per month so me must relocate. The neighborhoods outside San Fran are great but very expensive. Because my husband will only go a few times a year into the office, we can look a lot further. Can someone recommend a family friendly area with good schools 2-4 hours from San Francisco? We would like to spend no more than a 1m for a home. |

I actually used to commute from San Francisco to Sacramento (I typically travelled, so similar to your DH I only went in a few times a month). The drive is do-able. I always liked Davis, so consider that area as well, though I don't know about the schools. UC Davis is right there, so it makes for a nice university town feel. I'd try posting on the city-data forums to get other ideas. Is his job in the city itself? North and west of the city are your best bets on that case. South gets into Silicon Valley, so crazy expensive.
Maybe Benecia? Also check out wine country. |
Seattle. San Diego. He can just fly 1-2 times a month. |
| Santa Rosa |
|
Cheaper flights: Seattle or Portland.
Nearby: Sacramento |
| How about San Luis or Monterey? Personally, I wouldn't do Sac because of how hot it gets. SLO is a college town. Petaluma? I don't know how family friendly they are but, they are nice towns, and cheaper than the Bay Area. |
+1. my thoughts exactly. why not just fly? |
| Is he going to the office a few times per year or 1-2 times per month? If the former you can stay in DC. If the latter then what about Petaluma or Mendocino? |
And if it doesn't work out, you are 2 - 3 hours from a job center. Think this through a bit. |
| What if you just stay put for the first few months to make sure the job is a keeper? You can always move closer if it doesn't work. If he has to be in office 1-2 days a month for meetings he could just go the day before and come home the next day. 2 3-day trips a month is not a big deal. But my husband travels M-Th every week. |
| You will have fantastic options. I'd either go to Santa Rosa or Monterey. Neither are cheap though... |
| Santa Cruz! |
| Albany, Lafayette, Benicia, Davis |
| Davis. I went to school there. The public schools are excellent, it is incredibly safe, and the bike capital of the world! |
too cold and foggy, imo. |
